It was always in my nature to play the game

Born to Compete

I was born with a competitive nature
Being a first son I had to prove myself as
Being worthy of dad’s attention
I worked hard to please, when little I
Always wanted to help, Dad
Whether it was fixing things or
Pushing my little lawn mower as
He cut the grass that surrounded our home.

As I got older baseball and basketball captured me
However, I found for me good was never good enough
I had to prove myself, I had to be among the best
Being smaller than the other kids
I counted on my speed and quickness

I loved sports and played through high school
Then life intervene, I became an educator
My nature drove me to achieve a high post
During those years, sports were limited to
Pick-up games and student-faculty competitions

Now that I am retired, I still feel that driven urge
Flamed like a Phoenix rising from the ashes
Bowling answered my need by engaging with
My teammates three times a week
I have ups and downs, good days and bad
But I live to feel that competitive urge
Surge through my veins when I step to the line

I always want to win, but I have learned that
Competition is more than just
Winning or losing, at my age it is about
Friendship too.
