Blizzard Flash Fiction
Heartwarming Blizzard
by zanya
Beneath the dim street lamps, the road resembled an ice rink. Ann clutched the steering.
Fourteen- year- old daughter, Judy, in the passenger seat, seemed oblivious, as she hummed along to her Zotify favourites.
Cars inched forward. Last time she was in a blizzard, was with her dear departed, Tom.
Ahead, blue lights flashed. Police. She checked the glove compartment. Licence. All in order.
Tapping on the driver's window, the tall policeman asked, "Papers please".
With gloved hand, Anna pushed them through the half- open window.
"Mrs Myerton, are you travelling with your daughter?", he asked.
Before Ann had time to reply he said, "Condolences Mrs Myerton on your husband Tom's passing last year. Tom and I were basketball buddies."
Darkness shrouded his face.
Could it be Jim, she wondered, her first romance.
Reaching his gloved hand through the window, he said," Jim Carrison".
Though the mercury had dropped to minus two, she felt her forty-something face flush.
"Yes," she murmured, " how are you and Mimi?"
"Mimi died in childbirth," he replied.
"Mrs Myerton," he continued, "perhaps I can pay you a courtesy call to extend my condolences?"
Glancing furtively at Judy," she replied quietly " yes, of course, please do."
