Love At First Sight

A Romantic Christmas

by country ranch writer

Ever since I was a little girl Christmas has always been a big deal to me. It was my favorite time of the year because I always got to spend it with my Grandma and Grandpa. This year I was really looking forward to Christmas. Why do you ask? Because it was the first time in many years that I was getting to spend it with my grandparents since I left home. It was also the first time flying on an airplane as I usually drove everywhere I traveled. Getting away from the big city was just what the doctor ordered.

After getting off the plane I looked around for Grandpa but he wasn't to be seen, but in his place was a man holding a sign with my name on it. He was wearing a Stetson hat, western shirt, and a scarf around his neck with a jean jacket with soft fur inside. His jeans fit in all the right places, his smile could light up a room.

Who was this guy they sent to pick me up I wondered? I had never seen this man before? He was also holding a photo of me in his hand. Rushing up to me he said, "Hi!, It is finally nice to get to meet you face to face! I have heard so much about you! "When he spoke, his voice was edged with a southern drawl."

"You live around here?" he inquired.

"I was born and raised here until I grew up and moved on with my life," I informed him. I live in the big city of New York now. He didn't say much on the way home from the airport so I just put my head back against the truck seat of the truck and enjoyed the silenced rifting off to sleep.
He had said his name was Glen Smith and he'd volunteered to pick me up for Grandpa.
Grandpa was waiting on the front porch in his rocking chair. Crutches stood against the wall nearby. As I approached he said," As you can see this is why I wasn't able to meet you nodding his head at the crutches."

I told Grandpa smiling, "We did kind of bump into each other." While I was looking for you.

Smiling I gave Grandpa a kiss on the cheek and sat down in the rocker next to him. "Thank you for sending him after me."

It was odd I thought to myself, it felt like I had known him forever. From just the short time I rode in his truck from the airport.

Looking around the place it was all decked out to the hilt for Christmas, I told Grandpa," Everything looks so beautiful."

Glen looked over the top of my head winking at Grandpa. "I have to say I agree."

Grandpa had the biggest smile on his face as he retrieved his crutches and started into the house. He thought to himself, " They were already smitten with each other."

While passing down the hallway into the living room there right smack dab in the middle of the ceiling hung the good ole mistletoe.
Glen points up to the mistletoe, "Traditions need to be carried out don't you think?"

I agreed with him as he leaned in to kiss me right there under the mistletoe. His kiss was so tender and so full of promises of things yet to come. Holding me in his arms I felt like I was forever home and was safe in his arms. I couldn't explain it even if I tried.

Glen wondered if it was possible to fall in love at first sight. Glen thinks she is the smartest, strongest, hottest woman he has ever come across in his lifetime. He wonders how he is going to tell her he loved her from the moment they first met.

I have rediscovered the meaning of Christmas and found out the true meaning of falling in love. Christmas is surely the magical time of there year! Bluegrass is never forgotten or far away in this part of the world. Christmas at the Blue Store is a lively time of the year. People come to the Blue Store to forget their problems and spread cheer to everyone on the mountain. The Blue Store stands out during the holiday and is decorated so delightfully. It sparkles everywhere in all directions throughout the night.
Glen was in awe, as we hung out with the folks and he got to know his neighbors better. We hung out having hot chocolate to warm up, we even roasted chestnuts by the fire. I enjoyed his company and his arms holding me tight. I hated for our time together to end. But end it did promising to regroup for more outings later in the week.
People come for miles around to see and hear fiddles, banjos, mandolins, guitars, and double basses.

There were many days of picking and grinning going on including seeing my Great Grandpa up there amongst them. Oh! The foot stomping music will have you smiling from ear to ear till the winter thaws next year. It's sure to put a little country into your Christmas that's for sure!

Glen was enjoying his time here on the mountain and was beginning to feel right here at home. He invited me to come out to his ranch and help him decorate for the holiday. I was curious and jumped at the chance.

At the Blue Store, you will experience Christmas like you never had before. We bought all the wonderful decorations and lights we needed, three days later and headed to the outskirts of town to his ranch. It was like walking into a little bit of heaven. Glens' Mom was ecstatic he brought her there to his home. His Mom was there visiting for the Christmas holiday. They hadn't even begun to decorate for the holiday and now they had their work cut out for them. The place was huge and spacious. The put up the tree and decorations laughing and having so much fun doing it.

His Mom told her she had never seen her son so happy as he was now. She said "I was like a breath of fresh air giving him a new life," since his Dad had died.

Christmas used to be their best time of the year till his dad had died one Christmas Eve of a heart attack years ago.

This would be the first Christmas celebrating without him. They had quit celebrating because it was too painful.

I was so happy to be included in the beginning of a new chapter in their life. Glen's mom decided to stay inside where it was warm while we went out to admire the decorations. It was so beautiful, he took me in his arms and we just stood not saying a word. He then turned me around, he had tears in his eyes. I knew what he was thinking and softly said, '"It will be okay."
He then took me in his arms and told me he loved me since the day we had first met. He said, "I was the best Christmas present ever."
The music drifted on the night air down over the mountain from the Blue Store serenading us. It has a way of taking you on a journey and reconnect you with the true meaning of the season.
Christmas is a time for miracles and discovering romance right here up on the mountain. Whoever thought I would be the one discovering true love! Rediscovering a life I once couldn't wait to get away from when I was growing up.
