Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
I own my disability, it doesn't own me

No such word as Can't

by Aussie

"I can't walk upon the sand,"
I would sink up to my neck
Always find a helping hand
Sand and water by heck!

I love to swim in the sea
Water is healing to my stump
When I swim, I am free
No carrying of heavy lump

No such thing as "I can't" be
Find another way to swim
Water wheelchair sets me free
Wheel me down, toss me in

So many obstacles for amputees
We have the chance to be whole
Look at me, see me swim the seas
No, never whole again; trying to soul

Early days folks would stare
Ignorance and bad manners all
Solved the problem now they care
Just like you, I'm having a ball

Amputee jokes were once fun
Now annoying, too many, too much talk
Depression once set in; thanks mum
She picked me up and made me walk

"You have a life in so many ways,"
Mum gave me love and chance paid
No such thing as "I can't," happy days
Thirty-six years of walking, I'm made

I Can't contest entry

Thirty-six years ago a car accident left me with one leg. Never say never again. You can do it, it is worth it. I own my disability, it doesn't own me. At present I am having a new leg made ( 27 legs to date) and it will have Minions all over it. Kids will ask questions and I am happy they are not scared of me.

Thanks to Bing for the photo. I am 73 now.
