Kings and Princes trapped in golden cages

Caged

by tempeste

Like a bird in a gilded cage
unable to spread his wings
and fly away.

Born into a family
where duty and state
were his heritage.

Like a bird in a gilded cage
A prisoner often forced to wed
not for love but for the good of the nation.

Like a bird in a gilded cage
Surrounded by demanding courtiers
and nobles scheming to have
their share of power.

Lies and deceptions,
plots against his life
by poison or knife.

Like a bird in a gilded cage
A privileged life that
came with a high cost.

My poem is in reference to kings/queens and princes/princesses of the past. I think times then were more demanding for royalties.

Today it's slightly easier.
