Fran grabs Brenda again.

A chapter in the book The Captain's License

Taken Again

by Thomas Bowling

River was singing in the shower. Brenda heard him and came in. “Hey, you're really good. You have a great singing voice. Have you ever made a record?”

“I don't know. All the way to Sarasota and back. Is that a record?”

“Shit Head. Just once I'd like to have a serious conversation with you.”

“I can't help it. I used to date a girl. When we met she said, 'You're so funny. You make me laugh all the time.' I knew the relationship was over when she said, 'You think you're so funny.'”

“Be serious. How are we going to get Gage back?”

River smiled. “Do you think I would be singing if I didn't have a plan? It's all worked out. I've got something that'll lure him into the open where Lieutenant Jefferies can grab him. After three months, I'll know what color his hair really is. I'm guessing it's snow white.”

“Snow White was pretty.”

“Frank's got a pretty mouth. After two days in prison, it'll be all stretched out.”

“So, how do we get Gage back?”

“I'm going to call Frank and set up a meeting. I'll tell him I want to work for him and I can be very useful. I'm buddies with Jefferies. I can make sure he looks for Frank in all the places he's not. I doubt he'll meet with me, but it's worth a try.”

River made the call. “Frank, old buddy. Let's be friends. I can give you a great service. I can guarantee that . . . “

The line went dead. “Okay, now we go to plan B. You call Frank and tell him you've been thinking about him and you want to be his girl.”

“Great plan. I know he'll fall for that one. I'll call him right now.”

“You need to wait a few days. I don't want him to think we're working together.”

The day arrived for Brenda to call Frank. “Frank, Baby, listen I've been thinking about you a lot. I can't get you out of my head. I'm through with River. He doesn't treat me the way you do. How about it? Give a girl a chance. I want to be your girl.”

“I knew you'd come around after you met a real man. You're too pretty to be with a loser like Maddox. Meet me tomorrow at the Wharf.”

The following day, River and Lieutenant Jefferies were at the Wharf. A SWAT team was hiding in the darkness. River's cell phone rang. River looked at the number. “This isn't good. It's Frank.”

Frank was on the line. “What kind of idiot do you think I am? Did you really think I would believe that your bitch would go from hating me to wanting me in one day? You're not ready to run with the big dogs yet. You're gonna be sorry you tried. It wasn't very smart to leave your girlfriend alone. Her place or your place doesn't make any difference. I can reach out and touch her anywhere. I told you I could grab her again, asshole. I've got Gage and now, I've got her as insurance to make sure he does what he's told. BY the way, your Lieutenant friend was nice enough to play the tape of my alleged confession. That could have been anybody on that tape. Didn't the Lieutenant tell you that it's illegal to record anybody without telling them? A real estate lawyer could get that evidence thrown out of court and probably cloud your title while he was at it.

“You'll be glad to know that Gage has been using. My boys have been shooting him up. I thought he OD-ed. We almost lost him. We had to stick an EpiPen in his heart. I've got too much invested to find another captain. Your bitch will get her first hit tonight. Pretty soon, she'll be meek as a lamb. I might get her hooked and put her to work on the streets. She should pay her own way. Don't you think?”

“You're a dead man, Frank.”

Frank had already hung up and didn't hear the threat.
