This work has reached the exceptional level
on the sadness of leaving life behind

The rear view mirror

by Mark Valentine

Objects in the rear view mirror,
as time goes by come to appear
so small.
‘Til one day they just can’t be seen at all.

You travel and one day you find,
your life lies in the miles behind
the now.
You keep on driving though you’re not sure how.

And as the road ahead unfolds,
you find that it no promise holds
for you.
You recognize your journey’s nearly through.

The sad thing is you can’t go back,
each milepost past creates another lack
in life.
You lose your parents, then you lose your wife.

One sorrow holds no counterpart:
To see that everything your heart
held dear,
fade fast to nothing in the rear view mirror.
