An ode to my favorite food

Ode to the Pinto Bean

by Henry King

Glorious fruit of the vine
neither sweet nor dry like wine
Flavorful not by braggart's jest
you're up there with the very best

A few epicureans say you need cerdo
Some will always say try buffalo
A drawling Texan says gotta be cow
That's how my grandma makes it now

Some say add rice and others say no
Those who don't care dice in a potato
it really doesn't matter
what joins you on the platter

Scooped by flat bread of which there are two
one of corn the other of wheat either'll do
They can be fried crispy or eaten floppy
Their taste is very hard to copy

Your sauce enhanced by chili from Hatch
red or green always makes you the top match
Picante or not it's that special flavor
I will forever savor

This my ode
to the food of which I'm keen
the earthy brown pinto bean

Ode writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
An Ode is a poem praising and glorifying a person, place or thing.

I retitled this ode from "My Favorite Food' which was entered in the Ode contest. The picture is also changed to one more colorful. These notes are expanded from that in the contest.

Cerdo is Spanish for pork. The word puerco is a Spanglish word for pig, a derogatory term for policemen and prostitutes. Puerco is reaching respectability, because it's appearing more frequently on restaurant menus and in published recipes instead of cerdo.

The half-bushel cardboard box said the chili came from Hatch, NM. Chili roasting is going full blast in most grocery store parking lots. The aroma is intoxicating.
