Getting the News

by Beck Fenton

Evening is the time for thinking and reflection for us older folks. Just last night my neighbor friend stopped by to see how I was doing in the heat and humidity.

"Johnny," I say, "I get up every morning surprised and thankful I'm still on the right side of the dirt."

He laughs every time I say that. He's so cute.

He tells me he's a nerd. Says it with some pride, too. Guess he is pretty good because he fixed my TV when I couldn't afford cable any longer. I get all kinds of channels now! Such a thoughtful boy. His mama must be pretty glad he still lives with her.

I've started listening to the news stations. I love hearing them all report on the same old news. They get so animated, I worry about their blood-pressures! Today they are all excited about some hacker who has the country in a stranglehold. The hacker wants free cable for everyone or else! I don't know what the or else is, but they sure seem nervous. I like the idea myself. Free cable for all!

I'm going to bake Johnny some chocolate-chip cookies. He's such a good boy.
