A baby's first taste of sugar

Sugar Baby

by Connie C

Now really, Mom, how could it be
that you've held out on me this long?
This ice cream stuff is heavenly.
My eating this just can't be wrong.

When I'm at Grandma's, you will say,
"Don't give her sugar, it's so bad."
'Cause you're my mom, you get your way
which sometimes makes poor Grandma sad.

She wants to give sweet treats she's made,
treats made especially for me.
And yet your wish she has obeyed,
your wish that I stay sugar free.

But now, oh boy, you've changed your mind!!
I love, love, love this ice cream treat!
No greater joy is there I find
than getting something sweet to eat.

My fifteen-month-old granddaughter, Madeline, got her first taste of ice cream this past week, and there's no stopping her now from begging for more. I might have fictionalized this slightly when it comes to my role in wanting to give her sweets. I've tried to be good about avoiding them.
Thank you for reading.
