This poem is dedicated to Gemma

Little Sister

by Heather Knight

I dreamt of you
Before you came.
I dreamt of walking hand in hand.
I would protect you...
How very cruel
The way I've failed you!

We played together,
We shared, fought.
Our secret pacts
Bound us close.
'We won't tell Mum.'
'No, we won't.'

Time passed,
We grew,
Were torn apart.
I had my sorrows,
You had your pain.

I felt neglected
'Cause I was older.
I envied you
You had it all.

I liked your hair better than mine.
Mum said that curls were always best.
You were thinner,
I had those 'curves'...
And worst of all
You were Dad's girl.

This is all silly.
It makes no sense.
I know it now,
But it's too late.

We grew even more
And went our ways.
We fell in love,
We built our homes.

We had this fight
I spoke in haste.
You know how life
Gets in the way.

But you're still my little sis.
That's all that counts.
We're friends again.
Please say we are.
The guilt is eating up my heart.

Recognized

The poem above is not great, but it's a heartfelt tribute to my little sister who died a week ago today.
She hadn't been ill before and we still don't know the exact cause of death. She was only 48 and had four little children.
Apart from sadness, I feel guilt. We used to be very close, but have hardly spoken these past three years because of things that now seem a lot less important.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
