Woodpecker

by RodG

Upwards
he slowly works
tattooing with his beak
the wizened bark of spindly elm
until he's briefly gorged and flies away.

The tap-tap echo like a tolling bell
does not recede but lingers on
and then on yonder tree
begins anew
to play.
