Debating names with Shakespeare

Names, wonderful names!

by Sergeant Floyd

What's in a name? O shame, Shakespeare!
A name can conjure so many things.
A whole state of Virginia in pines.
Cuckoo cries and lederhosen
haunt a black forest.
Switzerland holes up in Matterhorn and cheese
enough to freeze the beard and brows
with sugary shaped sprinkles
like confectionary candy.

Names, wonderful names!
God appointed Adam the task
to name each and every living creature
and the name showed characteristics.
How the animal looked, moved
or reared it's young.
Sparrow a stone beneath the soaring eagle.
Dolphins play and dance in bright water.
The shark prowls like a tiger
the shadowy forests of kelp
and hunts.

God brought them to show Adam
he had no match but was alone
and lonesome became a word
and the word breathed death on life
until God gave him Eve
which means to live.

You answer to many names when called.
Daughter, mother, sister, wife
that bring in sheaves of memory
but my heart would choose right
to call you only Eve
while we have our garden being
in Eden.
