Little Black Girl

by Heather Knight

You sat by me
And I could see,
Just for a while,
A tiny glimpse
Of the little girl
I used to be.

You were so wise,
Innocent and sweet.
Words poured out of you,
Your mouth a china spout.

Question followed question,
Smiles drew dimples on your plump cheeks,
You said you liked my trainers
And told me about your high-heels.

Time flew by,
You had to go...
You will soon forget
The lady at the salon.

But I felt our conversation
Was a golden nugget.
I had met a fairy
At a shopping mall.

You wished me a good evening
And then, you were gone...

Recognized

Yesterday, while I was waiting to have my nails done, I sat next to a little girl and her two-year-old sister. As I noticed she was speaking English, I started talking to her. Our ensuing conversation was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding I have had in my entire life. At one point, she told me we should be proud of ourselves, but never think we are better than other people. And she was only six!
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
