I Was Scared
by Beck Fenton
She was tall and thin, settin' her right apart from all us Taylor women. We was pleasingly plump accordin' to my Grammy. And she was an old maid. That meant she didn't have no man around to do the heavy liftin'. No wonder she was so skinny. She was also wearin' bright red lipstick which meant she was probably goin' straight down to you-know-where. And her skirt was pretty short if you ask me, which nobody ever did.
"Would you like to learn to read and write?"
Her voice was pretty enough to coax cows home.
I could only nod.
