Progress

by Mastery

In days gone by
when sanity thrived
the only things teens worried about were
acne and homework,

Mom was at the door
when they came home from school
not shoveling bags through
Burger King windows.

a value meal was at home on the table.

Youngsters were quick to scramble outside
with Kool-Aid on their lips
just to play hide and seek, jump rope, shoot marbles,
or choose up sides to play cowboys and Indians.

No concern of being politically correct.

Computers were only in science fiction movies.

Two bits was a lot of money
and bought a pop, a comic book and candy bar
with change left over . . . and a penny was a big deal,
One buck opened a Christmas Club account.

War was something we learned about
in our history books and old movies.
We never watched bodies burn in the street
Or attended funerals for classmates.

Our progress gives one pause to wonder . . .
Advancement is one thing, insanity, quite another.
