Peaceful Surrender

by mvbrooks

Sara had imagined that on her last day she would peacefully surrender to the inevitable.

She'd turned sixty-two last Monday and celebrated with friends over a bring-your-best-dish buffet at Leslie's house.

The next morning, she woke with a fever. When it rose to 103 degrees, they hospitalized her.

For a few days, she fought the fever, going in and out of consciousness. She was sure she had overheard voices whispering about dying; she'd fought the urge to give in.

When she finally woke, Death was seated beside her bed.

"I'm not ready. You came too soon."

He nodded his head and said nothing.

"Go away; go bother someone else."

He reached out his hand and touched her wrist. It felt warm and comforting.

She pushed his hand away.

"I have so much more to do."

He stood and walked toward the door.

Pausing, he turned and said, "Do it soon."
