Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
a shepherd to admire

Odin and the Goats

by mermaids

it's just a job,
apathy rules
so I meander
through my work
collecting my pay

shepherd or hired hand
I am the hired hand
waiting for the dollars
to buy the essentials

Odin is a shepherd
he takes care of his goats
despite the raging wild fires
he stays with his flock
a human family leaves
in sadness
but upon return
there is Odin, his goats
and a group of deer

Odin has a calling,
he follows without
question, his whiskers
are singed but his
flock is safe

I go to work
with a canine's loyalty
God expects my best
the day is fulfilling
as I think of a huge
dog, a group of goats
wayward deer, all together
against the odds

The minister at my church gave a sermon today about the difference between being a shepherd and a hired hand. The shepherd gives his life for his sheep, the hired hand is there to do a job and collect his pay. She finished her sermon with the story of Odin. Odin is a Great Pyrenees who was in charge of some goats. When his family left their home because of wild fires(this is in California), Odin refused to leave the goats. When the family returned, Odin, the goats and some deer were all safe. I thought I would post Odin's story again with the fires raging again in California.
