by scongrove

Previously...

After Steven—Tessa’s fraternal twin brother—connects with Tessa telepathically and finds her location, the Breedline Covenant prepare to rescue her and take down Sebastian Crow. But before they come up with a plan, Sebastian uses his powers to create a portal and kidnaps his son Arius and Mia. When the Breedline find out they are missing, something triggers the outside alarms. While viewing the security cameras, they are shocked when dozens of Dr. Crane’s unearthly creations of Breedline hybrids topple over the gates and surround the Covenant.

Meanwhile, Thomas Carlyle—Sebastian’s twin brother—is threatened by Dr. Crane. With no other choice, Thomas lies to Sebastian and turns over Tessa and Lilith—Tessa’s biological mother—to the evil physician for research. And now, Thomas must continue to betray his own brother.

Left with no other choice, the Breedline go up against Dr. Crane’s hybrids in battle in order to defend their Covenant. During the battle, the Breedline are hit with grenades, knocking everyone unconscious except for Steven, Jem, and Casey. While Sebastian and Thomas escape through the portal, taking Jace with them, the rest of the Breedline regains consciousness and takes Samuel Mercier—a Breedline traitor who is helping Thomas—into custody.

As soon as Sebastian stepped through the portal and got his bearings, he looked down at Jace’s unconscious body in disgust. When he lifted his chin, he stared at Thomas with murderous intent.
“You son of a bitch!” Sebastian roared.
He knocked Thomas off his feet with one punch, sending him sprawling to the floor as Sebastian went down after him. Thomas’s formal dining room erupted in chaos as his men attempted to intervene.
Two men pulled their guns while Corbin Azzo and Fredrick Mercer attempted to pry Sebastian from Thomas.
It took the combined efforts of Corbin, Fredrick, and the other two men to finally get Sebastian off Thomas. No one made a move to help Thomas off the floor as he slowly picked himself up, wincing in pain. He wiped the blood that streamed from his nose and mouth, backing up until he leaned against the wall.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” Thomas demanded.
Sebastian lunged for him again, and Corbin placed his massive body between them, his gaze boring into Sebastian.
Eve stood in the shadows, peering around the corner as she watched the events unfold.
“Explain to me what the hell just happened back there,” Sebastian seethed, pointing his finger toward Thomas. “What were those things attacking the Breedline, and why the hell did you have me bring Jace back here?”
Thomas’s hand shook as he dragged it through his hair. “You have to know I didn’t intend for this to happen.”
“What are you talking about?” Sebastian barked.
Before Thomas could explain, Fredrick interrupted, clearing his throat. As much as it frustrated him not to demand information, to know what happened to his brother, he couldn’t hold back any longer. “Where’s Samuel?” he said in a panicked voice. “Where’s my brother?”
Thomas looked at him wearily. “I’m sorry Fredrick,” he muttered, shaking his head. “He didn’t make it.”
Fredrick went white. For a moment Thomas worried he might do something crazy like fall to the floor. His knees started to buckle, and Corbin reached out to steady him. Then Fredrick closed his eyes, and when he reopened them, his gaze was haunted and filled with regret.
Sucking in a breath to steady himself, Fredrick stammered, “I-It just can’t be true. I don’t sense his death.”
Sebastian blew out his breath. “If that fat ass isn’t dead… he’ll spill his guts to our whereabouts.”
“We need to prepare for the worst,” Thomas said calmly. “If indeed Samuel is still alive, it could be possible the Breedline have questioned him.”
Fredrick’s eyes darkened with fury. “We need to go back for him now.
Thomas moved next to Fredrick and grasped his shoulders, forcing him to look squarely at him. “You need to calm down Fredrick,” he said shifting his focus toward Corbin. “Take him to his room. I need to speak with Sebastian alone.”
Corbin was a mountain of a man, muscled, tattooed, quiet, but when he spoke, others paid attention. “Come on, Fredrick,” Corbin said, squeezing his shoulder lightly. “Let’s go.”
When Corbin escorted Fredrick out of the room, Sebastian stared at Thomas and broke off with a shake of his head. He was impatiently waiting for Thomas to finish explaining what the hell was going on.
Thomas stared back at him. “I screwed up,” he admitted, exhaling a heavy sigh. “I had no idea that you would be this involved. Someone is threatening me.”
Sebastian looked at Thomas, his eyes narrowed. “It’s time for you to start talking. Tell me what is going on here.”
Thomas nodded. His nostrils flared, and his lips flattened into a thin line. “They said they would kill us if I didn’t agree to help them find Lilith and her twins.”
“Who are they?” Sebastian asked impatiently.
“A team of scientists backed up by top military officials and wealthy prospects. They started a project over thirty-six years ago,” Thomas explained. “At first they were interested in psychic and telepathic power. They wanted a way into the heads of foreign government. They wanted their top secret weapons. It sounds crazy, yes, but then a whole lot of in-depth research was discovered after they found out about the Breedline species, Lilith’s abilities, and others similar to her.”
In the brief silence that followed, Sebastian pursed his lips and said, “Well… go on. I’m sure that’s not all.”
“When they found out about Lilith’s abilities to heal and others with special powers, it marked a complete turn for other possibilities. They studied each and every case of unexplainable abilities. Some proved to be useless, but there were others who clearly displayed resourceful talents. Years went into searching out people with exceptional gifts. They tested extensively until some of their experiments turned into a monstrosity—an abomination—such as the hybrids you witnessed earlier.”
A sudden thought occurred to Sebastian, and he shook his head. “You were the one who helped them find Tessa and Steven, weren’t you? And you’re getting paid?”
Thomas’s lip curled at Sebastian’s accusation. “Yes. I did help them locate Lilith after she escaped years ago with Tessa. After most of his life being held captive, Steven managed to escape and kept himself hidden from them until now. I didn’t want any harm toward Lilith,” he swallowed the knot in his throat, and added, “I’ve... fallen in love with her.”
Sebastian rolled his eyes and avoided Thomas’s awkward confession. “What do they want with Jace?” he queried, changing the subject.
Thomas gave a resigned sigh. “Isn’t it obvious? They want to experiment on him with the intentions of creating more. That’s why they want Tessa’s unborn children.”
Sebastian’s brows clenched. “Are they aware… of my son Arius?”
“No,” Thomas said bluntly. “For what it’s worth, I kept his abilities a secret from them. They have no idea what he is and what he will become.”
The tension in Sebastian’s brows eased. “What was Lilith actually planning to do with Arius?”
“She wanted…” Thomas paused for a moment, “…to use him to destroy Dr. Hubert Crane and all the others working with him. She never meant any harm toward him.”
“It doesn’t make any sense,” Sebastian ground out. “If Tessa is her daughter, why did Lilith want me to kill her before?”
“She had no memories of Tessa or Steven after all the experiments she went through,” Thomas said calmly. “She only had intentions of bringing forth Arius’s powers. By killing the Breedline queen, it would begin Arius’s transformation. Killing Tessa would be a great sacrifice. It would bring forth the son of the Chiang-shih demon. But then she slowly started regaining some of her memories. That’s when she ordered us to bring back Tessa unharmed.”
Eve quickly backed away and clamped a hand over her mouth. As she gasped in horror, the sounds were muffled by her palm.
“Those bastards have Tessa and Lilith, don’t they?” Sebastian questioned Thomas.
Thomas nodded, his eyes expressing defeat. “Yes.”
A moaning noise coming from below caught Sebastian’s attention. As he looked down, his eyes focused on Jace. When Sebastian lifted his chin, he glared at Thomas and said, “And soon they’ll come for him. Am I right?”
Without saying a word, Thomas stared back at Sebastian and nodded.
“So what now?” Sebastian demanded with his trademark arrogance, pointing in Jace’s direction. “You better think fast. He’s coming around.”
Thomas glanced down realizing time was of the essence as Jace was slowly becoming conscious. As he bent down, he reached into his jacket to retrieve a syringe, the same tranquilizer used to sedate Tessa. With one quick motion, he uncapped the needle and pushed it into Jace’s flesh.
Jace tensed a moment and then stiffened further when he felt the sting of a sharp object stab into his arm. His eyes shot wide catching a glimpse of the face that had tormented him endlessly. As he tried to reach out, his vision was already blurred with the effects of the drugs, distorting Thomas’s image until darkness replaced his sight.

Eve waited only a few moments before rushing back upstairs. When she got to the top, she moved quickly to her bedroom to pack, just enough to carry in a backpack. A few changes of clothing for her, a little cash she had, and only the essentials for Tidus and Arius.
She then went to the bedside nightstand, knowing Sebastian would show up soon. She dug out paper and a pen and hastily wrote a note for him. When Eve had finished writing, her eyes burned with tears. She then folded it and placed it on Sebastian’s pillow where he would find it. Having to say good-bye in a note ripped her heart right out of her chest, but she couldn’t stay in this estate any longer. Eve had to take her sons to the only safe place she knew—to her sister Mia and the Breedline Covenant.
With the backpack strapped around her shoulders, she picked up Tidus and put him on the bed. After she had scooped up Arius in her arms, she sat down on the bed next to Tidus and wrapped her arm around him, pulling him into her lap close to his brother. As she looked into Arius’s angelic face, she said in a soft voice, “Take us bye-bye, Arius.”
Arius’s features immediately brightened. “Mama,” he giggled, clapping his hands. And then a bright light engulfed his body, rising and surrounding Eve and Tidus as they all vanished through a portal.
From one heartbeat to the next, they reappeared in the same position; sitting on a bed but in a different room.
“Mama,” Arius mumbled again, pointing his finger.
Eve looked at the head of the bed and froze. Her twin sister Mia was lying motionless, appearing drugged. Eve quickly got to her feet and placed the boys on the floor, not wanting them to see the pain she was sure was evident in her eyes. She knew Sebastian had something to do with this.
As she moved close to the bed and leaned over her sister, she reached for her hand, lacing her fingers firmly in Mia’s.
“Mia,” she said in a quiet tone. “It’s me, Eve. Can you hear me?”
When Mia didn’t respond, guilt flashed in Eve’s eyes, and she knew she was dead-on with her assessment. Sebastian had taken Mia against her will and locked her up in this room, sedated. Eve wanted to yell at her and shake her until she snapped out of it, but she remained silent. She couldn’t take the risk of someone discovering where she was.
Releasing Mia’s hand, she shifted her focus toward the twins. Arius, who was sitting on the floor beside his brother, crawled over to Eve. She immediately scooped him up, hugging him fiercely, but Arius’s gaze remained fixed on Mia, his eyes rounded in fear.
“Mama?” Arius called out and glanced at Eve, tears filling his big eyes.
“She’s okay, sweetheart,” Eve said, praying to God she was right. “She’s just sleeping.”
Tidus whimpered and crawled over, his forehead creasing in concern as he latched onto Eve’s leg.
“Shhh…” Eve whispered. She gently placed Arius next to Mia and reached for Tidus. “It’s okay, baby.” Lifting him up, she held him in her arms tightly, just holding on, as grief washed through her. She closed her eyes and said a silent prayer. Tears coursed down her cheeks, colliding with Tidus’s soft curls.
Mia let out a moan of anguish, and she licked her lips, trying to speak, puzzled over the warmth radiating all through her body. “Arius…” Tears choked her words as she realized he was creating the warm sensation she felt. Was Arius healing her?
And then to her utter shock, Eve appeared, her face just over hers, and even more bewildering were the tears sliding down Eve’s cheeks, grief and sorrow swamping her eyes.
“Mia,” Eve choked out. “Oh my God. Are you okay?”
Mia nodded eagerly, her ability to speak around the flood of her tears knotting her throat.
Tidus crawled cautiously over to Mia, and then Arius moved over to allow him access to her. “Mama,” Tidus murmured.
As Mia smiled at him, he hugged her on one side, and Arius hugged her on the other. Her arms felt encased in cement, but she managed to lift them and wrap them solidly around the boys, reveling in the feel of them so warm in their embrace. She clung desperately to them, not wanting to let go.
When the boys eased back, Mia slowly pulled herself upright and met Eve’s gaze. “I don’t understand. How did you find me?” she said, her voice raspy and weak.
Eve eased onto the bed, enfolding her hand in Mia’s. She was shaking, Mia realized. Eve looked utterly undone. “Arius…” Eve said. “He brought me here using a portal. I asked him to take us out of here, and he brought us to you.”
Mia smiled back at her and then shifted her focus on Arius. “Do you think he can take us all back to the Covenant?”
“We can try,” Eve replied. “But how will we get him to understand where to take us?”
“I have an idea,” Mia said reaching out to Arius’s tiny hand.
“Arius,” Mia whispered. “Let’s go bye-bye and see Natalie.”
His thumb automatically slid into his mouth as he gazed brightly between Mia and Eve. His eyes lit up with excitement, and a big smile emerged from his lips hearing Natalie’s name. Within seconds, Arius glistened with a brilliant light.
Eve quickly grabbed Tidus and reached for Mia’s free hand. With their hands joined, the glow radiating from Arius surrounded everyone in the room as they disappeared through the portal.

Book of the Month contest entry

NOTE: This is not part of the chapter. A reference for terms and characters:

BREEDLINE - A species of humans that have the ability to change from human form into a wolf. They are not like the old legend of the Lycanthropy myth. Breedline species can shift into their wolf at will. The moon has no power over them. They do not pass their ability to other humans with a bite or scratch like the Lycanthropy myth.
The Breedline gene is passed down to offsprings that are born identical twins. Although they live amongst human, their species must be kept secret.
In wolf form, they have super strength, speed, and heightened senses. Compared to humans, Breedlines have tremendous advantages when it comes to health. Their bodies heal fast and are not subject to illnesses or diseases. The only thing that slows their healing process is silver. It is their Kryptonite. Besides old age, a silver bullet to the brain is the only thing deadly to the species.
All males change into their wolf at the age of eighteen. Females do not go through the change until they make love to their Breedline bonded mate.

BREEDLINE TWINS - Identical twins that are born from either one or both parents of the Breedline species. They have a strong, unbreakable bond from birth, are born with telepathic abilities, and have the power to sense the others emotions or injuries. In some cases, the bond between twins are so strong that if one dies, the other twin may pass on, especially if they don't have a mate.

BREEDLINE BONDING - The male Breedline spends their life in search of their bonded mate. When the male comes in contact with her, he instantly feels a simultaneous, desirable attraction and she becomes the most important thing in his life. He is there to love, protect, and cherish her until death. Once they are mated, they bond for life. It is possible for them to have more than one mate in their lifespan.

BELOVED - A word used by a Breedline to express the bond to their mate.

DOUBLE BONDED - In some cases, male Breedline twins bond with the same female, but one will carry a stronger bond. Usually one of them must sacrifice for the other twin.

BREEDLINE COVENANT - The Breedline species must live within the boundaries of a Covenant, which is only formed with their species. The Covenant is governed and ruled by a head council. The council keeps their laws in order and oversees the species population.

THE BREEDLINE QUEEN - Over centuries the Breedline Covenant is ruled by a true Queen. If there is no Queen living, the Covenants are governed by an appointed head council until another Queen is born. A Breedline Queen is born once every one hundred years. Her massive stature, black fur, and red eyes are the Queens trademarks. Her alpha wolf has twice the strength, speed, and size of any Breedline. The Queen is expected to rule over all the Breedline Covenants where she will be respected and obeyed by all Breedline. This is their absolute True Law.

THE QUEENS RING - This ring has been passed down to all Breedline Queens for generations. When the new Queen places the ring on, it instantly shifts in size to fit her finger.

TRUE LAW - All Breedline Covenants have an ancient book of laws. If either sex disobeys the Breedline laws, they can be shunned, or no longer protected by their Covenant. If a Breedline takes another life out of revenge, or evil - other than protecting their life, and the life of another - they will never have the ability to shift back human and cast out as a rogue wolf.

ROGUE WOLF - A Breedline shunned by their Covenant for taking another life out of revenge or evil and forced to live as a wolf until death without the ability to change human again. Some rogue wolves form into packs, which can be dangerous for other Breedline species.

RED (BLOOD) MOON - When the full moon passes through the amber shadow of the earth, producing a midnight eclipse visible across North America. So begins a lunar eclipse tetrad, a series of four consecutive total eclipses occurring at approximately six-month intervals. This incredible light beams into the heart of earth's shadow, filling it with a coppery glow and transforming the moon into a great red orb. During this time, all Breedline species that are mated have a strong desire to create an offspring. This is also a time when Breedline females are more fertile for the conception of twins.

CHIANG-SHIH DEMON (Kiang shi, a.k.a Ramael Arminius) - An ancient demon that inhabits the body of a Breedline fetus before it's born, or during a Breedline's death. It continues to take the soul over the natural lifespan of the child, or the deceased Breedline. When the demon possesses a fetus, it breaks the bonding and telepathic abilities of their twin when they are born. If the demon possesses a deceased Breedline's body, it must do so before the soul passes on. If the soul is not intact, the body will soon die.
In most cases, the Chiang-shih demon will take the life of the other twin, even before their birth. The twin that is born with the demon will bring only evil to whomever they encounter. Their sole purpose is to gain full control of another soul and seek world domination.
There are two ways the demon is cast from the soul it possesses: by its first-born son, and the Angel of Mercy, Zadkiel. The Beast is the only one who can kill a Chiang-shih demon.

THE BEAST â?? He is the second born son of the Chiang-shih demon. When provoked into a rage, he will shift into his Beast instead of his Breedline wolf. The Beast is an enormous, dangerous two-footed creature that has wolf-like features. One bite has enough venom to kill the Chiang-shih demon and leave the soul of the person the demon possessed unharmed.

SHADOW WALKER (a.k.a Shadow Figure, or Black Mass) - The perception of a patch of shadow as a living, humanoid figure, particularly interpreted by the Breedline as the presence of a malevolent entity. When a Breedline species dies and does not pass on to the other side, they are left to roam the earth as a shadow of themselves - a ghost. They will not pass on until they have settled unfinished business before their death.

ZADKIEL (Tzadqiel, a.k.a "Righteousness of God") - The Archangel of freedom, benevolence, and mercy, and the Patron Angel of all who forgives. Breedline species tradition considers him to be the Angel of Mercy.

SUCCUBUS (a.k.a CREEPERS) - Creatures that search for, and feeds off the blood of the Breedline species. Creepers are skilled at extreme sexual pleasure, and the ecstasy they create is exceedingly intense and highly addictive. They cast off a scent that hypnotizes Breedlines into overwhelming sexual urges. They use their human-like bodies and beautiful features to control and influence their thoughts.
They have the ability to reach into the Breedline's mind during sleep, casting a spell of dreams about sexual contact, or intercourse. And one much less obvious manifestation of Creepers is nightmares - realistic, graphic, terrifying nightmares that rob the Breedline of sleep. Over a period, it can lead to severe fatigue and depression, leaving them emotionally and spiritually drained. Death can occur if they completely take over the Breedline's body.

HALF-BREED - This species is born with the genes from both Breedline and succubus. They can bond with either a full-blood Breedline or another half-breed. They do not have the ability to change into the Breedline wolf, but they do need blood from them to survive. With the power to hypnotize, most Breedlines have minimal respect and credence toward the half-breed species.

WICCA (or Wise One) - According to the Breedline species, a Wicca is the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts, and necromancy. A Wicca is also considered to be a demonic spirit. It is unclear to the Breedline if they act under the orders of the devil, or they are simply not understood and treated as outcasts. They have the ability to do white magic (good) or dark (evil).

GUARDIANS (a.k.a Spirits of the Forest) - They originated during the Middle Ages with the purpose of protecting all creatures, especially the Breedline, from the destruction of any creation made by a dark Wicca. They have the ability to stay invisible with the power to move through any barrier and over any distance instantly.

THERIOMORPH - This species is born with the genes of a Breedline, but do not have the ability to change into a Breedline wolf. They shape shift into an enormous black panther. They possess powers of mind manipulation and random visions of the future. They must use the drug dopamine to suppress their urges. Their eye color shifts into a glowing lavender when their Theriomorph nature takes over. The Breedline see them as a threat to their species.

ADALWOLF - A species that has the power to shift from their human form into a beautiful creature, three times the size, resembling half man and half wolf. Born with super-strength, they can move from one place to another in supernatural speed. Their eyes take on the appearance of two-shimmering diamonds. With the power to regenerate their own cells, an Adalwolf will stop aging at thirty. The moon has no power over them. And an Adalwolf is immune to silver. They can bond with any species.
