Childhood Memory One

A chapter in the book Childhood Memories

A Living Fantasy

by Bichon

A short series of essays based on memories.
I still recall the childhood stories my parents so often told me. Most of them included some species of animal, usually they were wild.

When I was told a trip to the zoo was planned, the childish excitement practically blew me away. I was finally going to see the creatures that fueled the stories that always enveloped me completely. The animals that pranced among my dreams will finally enter into reality.

As we stepped inside the zoo gates, I was amazed. Each individual habitat consisted of a different terrain, from long twisting dew covered grass, to dark looming trees that had ghastly branches dipping down. The foliage expanded as far as my tiny eyes could process, but it was what lurked inside the overgrown vegetation that amazed me.

Hidden deep inside was a magnificent beast occupying each enclosure. There was practically a living fairytale inside these creatures, my little mind couldn't believe it was real. I didn't need to hear those silly stories anymore, I was now living in a surreal world, and I never wanted to leave.

As we explored each animal with great interest, the one I was truly captivated by was the king of the jungle himself: the lion. My tiny eyes watched with fascination as his big paws led him through the thicket that he called his home. His amber eyes glisted in the darkness as his ears twitched, I was convinced he was communicating in some fashion.

Before we reluctantly left the zoo, we stopped to purchase a cuddly toy in the form of the lion himself. Even though the plushie was significantly smaller then the mammal it was sculpted of, it still made my young heart soar with happiness. Looking back on that, I can truly see why they claim it is the smaller things in life that are the best.

Book of the Month contest entry

Definitely one of the most important experiences to my younger self. I always loved animals, and still do.
