Oh, to be a skilful artist and paint nature

If I Was A Skillful Artist...

by Margaret Snowdon

Best Poem Contest Contest Winner

If I were a skillful artist
with paintbrush in my hand,
I’d paint nature’s splendour
seen in sky, sea and land.
I’d start with a morning sunrise
using soft, sweet golden hues,
then add a splash of crimson
with greys and different blues.
I’d capture a spider’s web
of spun gossamer lace,
in the most creative patterns
of beauty and such grace.
I’d design an awesome waterfall
cascading to a lake below
and far off on the horizon
mountain peaks topped with snow.
I’d paint an emerald meadow
as it comes to life in spring,
and a special nest for Robin
where he would proudly sing.
Rosebuds kissed with dew
in the sparkling early light
and somewhere on my canvas,
the shape of ducks in flight.
And mighty ocean waves
with gulls upon the shore.
All these things I’d paint,
and oh, so many more,
if I were a skillful artist
with paintbrush in my hand,
painting nature’s beauty
seen in sky, sea and land.
