Unexpected alarm

Dire Warning

by HarryT

Screeching ripped into a pleasant dream
During a shivering December night
My brain detected a precarious scheme
Bolted upright in bed, banged my throbbing head

Slipped from my cozy covers into the quaking cold
My heart thumping, was it a blaring air raid warning?
Flung open the window, wind blasted, harsh and bold
Surging wails were not from the nearby weather siren

Cracked open the solid core door leading into the hall
Smoke alarm shrieked its continual, impatient scream
Palls of smoke curled up the corridor wall
Fire department frantically called, it was no dream at all
