A late night call leads to conflict

Close Call

by StanNJ

Daniel was normally a light sleeper, but tonight it took several rings before he was fully conscious of the phone. Awake now and annoyed, he looked at the LED clock. 3:39. He picked up the handset and heard scratching sounds, and rock music playing on a cheap car radio. He was about to hang up on the careless pocket dialer whose clothing was rubbing the mic. Then he heard his frightened daughter.

“Where are you taking me?”

“To my hole in the wall,” said a vaguely familiar voice.

Then, silence.

Who is that? Come on brain, come on ... Bryce! that Doomsday Prepper, and that's what he calls his hideaway.

Vicky’s father dressed, grabbed his rifle, and some protein bars for breakfast in the woods. He found the cabin, set up facing its front window; and waited. It took one shot, and his daughter was free.
