Dog Adventures

Nose Knows

by Sis Cat

At night I walk my dog along the road
that borders groves of eucalyptus trees.
The smell of chimney smoke perfumes the breeze,
but scents that Mina only smells forebode
awakened vibes to twitch her nose and goad
her glinting teeth to bare and legs to freeze.
She growls at shadows cloaked in shade and leaves.
My dog retreats along the road we'd strode.

At home, I read reports that pumas roam
along the ridge between Pinole and home.
Police advise to never walk at dusk or dawn.
Don't run, but face them, yell, and boost your height.
On leash, my dog adventures past the lawn
to find what scents will cross her path tonight.

Rhyming Poem contest entry

Recognized

A Petrarchan sonnet (ABBAABBA CCDEDE) where the octave introduces the theme or problem while the sestet solves or comments on the problem. I thank krys123 (Alexis Krysyna) for encouraging me to try this form.

Yes, my Chihuahua Mina and I happened to walk the night when people spotted a mountain lion within a mile of my home. While I do not know if it crossed over or under the freeway to roam my neighborhood, when something Mina smelled frightened her, I followed her back inside.
