A Prose Poem entry for Animal Crackers Club

by Wetbelly01

An old fellow back in Missouri, told me about his hound dog named Ruthie.
"Best hunter anybody ever saw!"
He'd worked out a system with her. He'd tacked different sized 'possum hides on boards.
If they had one person extra coming for dinner, he'd hang the littlest boarded hide out on the back porch.
Ruthie would get the measure, go out and fetch back a 'possum the exact same size.
If three people were coming, he'd just hang out a bigger hide.
"Ruthie never missed, she was a stickler for rightness!"

"Sad thing though," says he, " One day a man wearing a 'coon skin overcoat visited us
and hung that coat on the back porch."

"Poor Ruthie. She took the measure of that coat and being a dog that knew her duty,
she took off in them woods...And never returned."
"She's still out there looking for a 'possum as big as that coat, I reckon."

Now that's dedication!! ....
