A Veteran Remembers

by Thomas Bowling

A Veteran Remembers

The horror I shall not forget
I'm eighty now
And remember it yet

We stormed the higher ground
Death and slaughter is all we found
The dying lay screaming all around.

This day from Hell will never pass
As long as there is life in my soul
Someone must learn the lesson I know

If I can teach someone not to fight
I will try to do it with all my might
And hope someday they see the light

The picture is my father during World War II.
