Herbal Garden Home

by sfharper

Every garden should make a home
for health and hearth with herbs.
Smells as fruitful and tart as loam
to savor taste and longing curb.

In the cracks of rock thyme is laid.
A sprinkle of seeds for pickle and bread
tamped in soil will find nurture paid
out as tall caraway and dill's stars shed.

With lemon verbena take of tea tarts
or salad's sorrel, parsley and face
of nasturtium's pepper lace starts
the green grows a come hither trace.

For life follows sweet scent of fire's tube
fennel, first the bees then the birds
all in search of onion or chive lube
or fickle seed with whistle's answer heard.

The sneaky though arrive in the night
scratching and digging, or nibbling leaf
so nuts never hatch, and berry out of sight
and only the footprints of mammal for belief.
