Ode to Autumn

Ode Contest Winner
As Autumn passes much too fast,
I wish to pause my calendar,
discover how I might preserve
in amber every day of her.

She has a splendor unsurpassed.
Such gaudy leaves--red, yellow, puce--
enthrall and easily enchant.
My ardent praises are profuse.

Autumnal scenes all should be saved--
each vista filled with vivid trees,
lush verdant lawns, cerulean skies--
a world where Nature seems at ease.

I also wish to store away
those hearty smells of harvest time--
the robust scent of apples ripe
and vineyard grapes now in their prime.

But poets, painters all will fail
to capture Autumn's elegance,
for man cannot immortalize
what God created with a glance.
