a nonet about the evolution of languages

Language Hard-Wired or Shaped

by Joan E.

seven  thousand  languages  spoken
each with a unique blend of sounds
words and structure placed oddly
verbs sometimes near the start
of  sentences  and
at times their end

do cultures
or genes

Nonet Poetry Contest contest entry

Linguists have contended that our brain is hard-wired for language to follow certain sets of rules. However, researchers have recently found that choices may be driven by culture rather than innate preferences. I have a hunch there is an interplay of both factors.

A nonet has nine lines. The first line has nine syllables, the second line eight syllables, the third line seven syllables, until line nine finishes with just one syllable. It can be on any subject and rhyming is optional.

Pays one point and 2 member cents.
