An acceptance

by DR DIP

AN ACCEPTANCE

We came by ship to foreign lands
We knew not what to expect
Every migrant understands
We all have to earn respect

We brought our religion, we brought our ways
We brought our naivety as well
We all came for hope of better days
But there were things we couldn't foretell

Acceptance is a word so hard
A word so hard to make
We really struggled in this regard
We always tried to partake

We were thrown in community shelters here
Herded with many others
A refugee's life was so unclear
The first thing one discovers

Mum and Dad always had a tear
Was a new life just an illusion?
Alienation was our biggest fear
Amongst all this confusion

A year had passed, another year older
School was hard at first
Don't think kids could be much colder
Into the deep end we were immersed

Acceptance was all we ever desired
Nothing more, nothing less
Just to be one was all we aspired
It takes a while I guess

Mum still cries herself to sleep
Still wonders why she left
I hate to see her often weep
She just felt so bereft

Dad, he worked so very hard
For us, he just wanted to provide
Wish I could help in this regard
But Dad had too much pride

Now 3 years on, I've made some friends
Mum and Dad have made some too
Hope this new life never ends
I think we'll make it through

We can't go back too far in our family history where we were not migrants coming to a new land in one way or another.
Except for the American red Indians, The aborigine in Australia for example we have come to these corresponding shores as migrants in our heritage.
Whether it be English italians , greeks, Africans Vietnamese, Lebanese, Arabian, need I go on We were migrants.
this is the poem about that acceptance into that new country especially in the first and second generations who have trouble being accepted because of their religious and cultural background.
There's bad apples in all races but that doesn't mean we tar all families of that race with the same brush.
