Pacific Coast Highway

by Joan E.

scrubby hillsides dotted
with broad bountiful trees
bordered by endless sea

four lanes of asphalt
clutch curved shoulders
roll through paradise

Pacific coast pelted
by squads of pelicans
crossed by cormorants

dolphins draw eyes
to distant horizon
highway of dreams

I wrote this poem in response to a prompt in my creative writing class that asked us to think about a local drive in Southern California as if we were a tourist. (The photograph was actually taken at Point Reyes in Northern California, but it captures the theme and mood.)
