by Thomas Bowling

It was after midnight when the phone rang.

“Hi, Babe,” I said in my most cheerful voice. “It's late. I was just getting ready to go to bed.”

“Before you do. I want to tell you something,” she said. “I hate you. You're the most horrible man I know. You make me sick. I can't believe I ever let you touch me. It makes my skin crawl. God, I hate you. I wish you were dead.”

This went on for almost an hour. Then in a small, pleading voice, she asked, “Will you please come and see me?”
