Autumn Contest Entry

Autumn Kiss

by June Sargent

A quick campfire kiss
that took us both by surprise
was the beginning
of a sweet romance lasting
over half a century.

Was it the s'mores or
the hot cinnamon cider
that made me feel warm
and fuzzy that Autumn night,
when the leaves began to fall

Or, was it the way
the firelight danced in your eyes
as we talked and laughed -
wishing the night would not end
as the sun began to rise.

Memories like these
still bring a smile to my face.
Now that we have reached
the Autumn of our blessed lives -
let's throw more wood on the fire!
