But in tears I left you drowning, drowning.

Livin' in the Bay

by Sis Cat

Livin' in the Bay.
My love's gone away.
Livin' in the Bay.
Pretend I'm okay.

I walk these hills alone.
Along ev'ry street I roam,
searchin', searchin' for peace since I left you
cryin', cryin'
our love gutted and dyin'.
How could it be?
Was it me?

Livin' in the Bay.
My love's gone away.
Livin' in the Bay.
Pretend I'm okay.

On foggy Frisco nights,
I walk to see the sights,
scannin', scannin' crowds for traces of you
smilin', smilin'
our bodies entwinin'.
Sweet memory
now history.

Livin' in the Bay.
My love's gone away.
Livin' in the Bay.
Pretend I'm okay.

I watch from the shore,
imagine us once more
sailin', sailin', but in tears I left you
drownin', drownin'—your hands and heart flailin'.
You needed me.
Tragedy.

Was it me?

Livin' in the Bay--colloquial shorthand for "living in the San Francisco Bay Area."

Closer to Otis Redding's "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" than to Tony Bennett's "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," "Livin' in the Bay" is my heartbreak song for the San Francisco Bay Area.
