The Trials of a Western Writer

The Trials Of Being A Western Writer

The Cisco Kid, Zorro and The Lone Ranger
Visited weekly with new tales of danger.
Then I learned to read and added new I started to tell
The desire to write my own started to gel.

I started with Green Hornet and Mystery of radio types
Boston Blackie and The Shadow increased the hypes.
Next came attempts to write about the West.
At first, I wrote poorly and failed at my quest.

Kid Colt, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry were popular then.
The gunslinger and singing cowboys started a new trend.
I found True West Magazine; Historic Western stories galore
Popularity of Westerns landed on foreign shores.

Shane, Liberty Valence-many more, translated by popular demand.
John Wayne dethroned Roy Rogers with a single hand.
Spaghetti Westerns, pornographic scenes weakened Western desire;
Writers using the same false name added more fuel to the fire.

Remakes were tried to change the downward flow without success.
Reruns -- Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and Will Sonnet: poor second best.
In this shaky environment, I knew the odds and picked up my pen.
My goal was simple; Resurrect the Wild West and bring its exile to an end.
