Life and Death

by mfowler

this side of hell or tranquil heaven, dreams
of death and what beyond embrace my mind.
what I've believed is stirred, contested in
a sieve of wisdom, story, trickery.
I've seen the loss of faith through science fact
and heard the hollow roaring of the bell.
there's life, then death, and nothing more, so live
as though there's nothing else. I've walked with fans
of spiritual trust, with hands adjoined
and hope assured. First birth, then life, the fight
with guilt and sin... then death, renewal... dark,
but promised bliss aglow in father's beam.
I've felt the awe of holy gift... twin peaks
adorned in coats of white and sun... and watched
the paths of blessed men whose selfless prayer
and lives declare a force beyond this life.
religions fly their precious truths amid
the facts of earthly doubt. the passions swirl
as faith is worn and sworn to those who'll hear.
to me, the journey through the this and that
has left me where I started... no clear truth,
no clear lie, no way to say what goes.
with death a breath away, I'll think, I'll muse
on what we know, and trust what gives me hope.
