Laying my son to rest

Show Me A Sign

A Rainbow Contest Winner
I did all I could, Lord
I begged him to turn to you
The life was ebbing from his body
As I pleaded to save his soul

When I held the box with his ashes
I traveled to the shores of the Gulf
That was where he loved to be
On a boat under sparkling skies

I scattered his remains on the surface
And watched them descend to the deep
This mother's heart was in torment
Not knowing if he made his choice

A sign, dear Lord, I beg of you
I want so much to know
Is my son up there with you
Or has he been cast below

Driving away with tears still falling
I couldn't believe what I saw
In a cloudless sky of deepest blue
A huge white cloud appeared

The end of a rainbow emerged from the top
And I followed it with my eyes
It traveled back to the spot in the Gulf
And came to rest on my son's watery grave

My tears of sadness turned to joy
The sign had been given to me
My son is safely in God's embrace
Now we both can rest in peace
