A woman waits for someone in a cafe

by oliver818

Her finger rubbed around the edge of the cup. Her unblinking eyes saw his smile, his loving face. He was always so punctual, why hadn't he arrived yet?

"He must be running late," she said out loud to herself. "That's okay, I can wait."

A warm hand landed on her shoulder.

"Mrs. Van Kelsey? It's time to come home, Mrs. Van Kelsey."

"But John hasn't arrived for tea yet."

"Mrs. Van Kelsey, I'm so sorry but your husband has been dead for six years."

"Oh, I see."

A ripple crossed the cup as a single tear dropped into her tea.
