Marriage vows

by Bucketlist

The vows were to love, honor, and obey
Well mine lived to tell another day
said before people, vicar, and God
This is a tale of a misogynistic Sod

Everything was fine, until the fights broke out
Two personalities differed without a doubt
I passive aggressive, he plain explosive
Every volatility he claimed me as the motive

This lasted years through thick and thin
enmeshed together, without any win
The kids were a basis for disagreement all
raising them without fights was an order tall

The years passed by each holding a secret
swept 'under the rug' so we could look perfect
The kids of course, saw right through
the facade that we called me and you.

Then came Vietnam war, and off he went
back more aggressive than when he was sent
Took over without so much appreciation
of my family efforts from his disassociation

Life once again became in upheaval
gone were the good days, now mostly evil
I tended to running a home, work, and school
looking back, I realize we both played the fool

Divorce was not in my family, never a soul
protecting our kids from arguments was my goal
Never giving them credit to see between lines
but of course they interpreted all of the signs

Together we are entwined in a lacking nest
still in restless mode, pushing love to the test
The kids are adults and away from 'home'
but the mistakes of ours are still all ingrown

In sickness and health are another matter
Grandkids' feet were now heard to patter
'Til death do us part' began as the rule
but sickness changed, became my school

Since I've become partially disabled
his support is needed to self enable
"I didn't sign up for this" angrily said he
there's many places he'd rather be.

So, the blame goes on, I'm sorry to say
both of us good people, at heart, we stay
Each other's nemesis with regrets on both parts
that our choices didn't bring closeness of hearts.
