A poodle learns that appearance isn't everything

The Wise Greyhound

by HarryT

Mr. Greyhound, a rescue from the
dog track, just moved in next door.
Here I sit black paw and all
What will he think of me?
He being a full pedigree.

I told Mayzie, that Lhasa Apso bitch,
"Mayzie, stop saying that my paw has black roots.
You know," I told her, "my owners make me paw print
Christmas cards. I'm part of the family. You know,
I'm a white, pure bred, standard, French poodle."
"That's what you say," Mayzie retorted. "I think
you bleach that paw. You're nothing but a mixed breed mutt!"
"Take that back!" I shouted, but she just walked away.

Oh, my gosh, Mr. Greyhound just came
Out of his house and he's coming this way.
I must tell him Mayzie is spreading rumors.
He has to know that this black paw is not me.

Oh, my gosh, he's coming over
"Good morning," says he with bow of his regal head
I notice his eyes roaming and stopping at my black paw.
I blurt out, "My owners ink my paw, it's not
really a part of me. You see, they make me
paw print Christmas cards they send to friends.
You see, I'm considered one of the family."

I demurely toss my head and blink my eyes,
in my best French voice I say, "Please
believe me, I am a full-bred pedigree."
He nods his head and walks about me
and says, "Really, my dear, a little blemish
means nothing to me. I've learned through
my racing years, appearance makes little difference,
it's what one has in one's heart that is significant.

"Oh, you are so wise, Mr. Greyhound,
I know I can learn much from you." He says,
"How about you show me the neighborhood."
"Oh, kind sir," I say, "Be happy to," and
We were on our way...
