Paying Respects

I drift up to the coffin's lid
to see what's hid;
I scream out loud.
Beneath the shroud

I see a face I quickly place.
No need to trace,
those lines are mine--
a lonely shrine.

The preacher speaks his words of doom ...
an empty room,
I only see--
self-centered me.
