A Villanelle on Freedom

Is There No Gratitude?

by ~Dovey

He traded his youth for all we hold dear --
in his mind those battles rage on today.
Why does our gratitude seem insincere?

Why do we turn a blind eye when he's near -
our manners and morals in disarray?
He traded his youth for all we hold dear.

The horrors he has known for us, unclear --
our debt to him is one we can't repay.
Why does our gratitude seem insincere?

A soldier is a man we should revere --
preserving rights to live life our own way.
He traded his youth for all we hold dear,

and still, there is no fanfare for him here.
Invisible -- his vivid life turned gray.
Why does our gratitude seem insincere?

He stood guard to alleviate our fear,
returning home with nightmares held at bay.
He traded his youth for all we hold dear.
Why does our gratitude seem insincere?
