The Questioning Heart

The antiseptic smells in the room could not mask the overpowering odor seeping in from the street. On a small, dingy pauper's cot in a hospital deep in Calcutta, India, Mother Theresa lay dying. Beads of sweat forming on the old woman's forehead were lovingly wiped away by a young nun holding her hand. The stifling heat in the room was broken only by an ancient overhead fan. Noise from outside filled the air.

Mother Theresa turned her head, and smiled at the young nun, "God bless you child."

"And you as well," the sister said, unable to hold back her tears.

"Do not cry, we all must suffer and die, just as Christ did for us on the cross. I too must suffer for my sins, and die."

"Oh please, not now Mother. What sins could you possibly...."

Mother Theresa feebly held up a frail hand interrupting the young novitiate, "Most of my life I have questioned the existence of God. My faith has always been weak. For this sin I must pay."

"God will surely forgive you Mother."

"He has always been close to me, even when I have doubted him." The old nun smiled, "I remember the story of Christ's crucifixion, as Jesus suffered his last moments on the cross he said, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? Every time my faith grows weak, I remember that I am in pretty good company."

Tears filled Mother Theresa's eyes, "May your heart always question, but never lose faith in God."

She closed her eyes and breathed her last breath.

Even Saints lose faith, but God is always there when we open our hearts. This story is total fiction, Mother Theresa's last words were "I can't breath." but her lack of faith was well documented. Nevertheless, I am sure God forgave this Saint.
