A chapter in the book Whispers In The Shadows

Secret In The Sea

by Susan Chetcuti

Motionless she drifts with the incoming tide,
down in the wide blue ocean she died.
Offering herself for a moonlight swim,
Its betrayal had seduced and dragged her within.

A lifeless body had swept out of sight,
into its depths through the darkness of night.
The Sea's fury hears her echoing name,
but will not let go of this victim its claimed.

With delicate features now pale like the sand,
something so small sits within her closed hand.
As murmuring callings awaken her soul,
a sense of well being she somehow feels whole.

Bewildered and lost in the depths of the deep,
something so magical awakens her sleep.
Releasing the object held firm in her grasp,
out swims a seahorse to guide her at last.

As breaking waves linger upon the sea's shore,
her past life forgotten, with memories no more.
a mystical mermaid she's now come to be,
because once her beauty had outshone the sea.

I wrote this poem after being inspired by the song Every Breaking Wave. Written by U2.
