A Grand Parade

A Grand Parade
                  by michael cahill

A grand parade, a noble tribute's made;
the stripes of rank are boastfully displayed.
A general flicks his ash upon the crowd,
his saber gleams unscratched, and he stands proud.
He leads his troops down Main Street unafraid.

A soldier bows to pomp indeed outweighed
for circumstance beyond's the way war's made.
The screams of death in battle--not allowed.
A grand parade!

The powers waging war have wagers played
with pawns galore, the battlefields inlaid.
There's body bags the horror to enshroud---
acceptable, the casualties allowed.
Enjoy the spoils: this splendid promenade--
a grand parade!
