a nonet poem

the jacket

by judester

His school jacket still hangs on the chair
where he hung it, without a thought
that tomorrow might not come.
She can't put it away.
Stroking it, she cries,
thinking of him.
That jacket
of his,
hers.

Nonet Poem Contest writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a nonet poem. It's a simple format. A nonet has nine lines. The first line has nine syllables, the second line eight syllables, the third line seven syllables, etc... until line nine that finishes with just one syllable. It can be on any subject and rhyming is optional.

When I was in high school, my boyfriend's brother died tragically. I went to his house the next day and through the kitchen door, I saw his mother stroking his school jacket and crying. That was the first time I had seen real grief.
