A chapter in the book Poetry of the Soul

Much to My Chagrin

by Susanne M. Psyris

A million pieces of my heart, they break
Each time I recollect the loss you've known
If it were possible, then I would take
Away the misery your life has shown.

The tears that trickle down your eyes to chin
Arrest my soul and cause my heart to bleed
I search for words for healing to begin
But, none can fill the void, that painful need.

Then, suddenly, and much to my chagrin
I realize that you must make the start
For all the empathy felt deep within
I cannot change the physics of your heart.

You'll always have a shoulder to cry on
Until the day I pass and I am gone.
