Mother Eve

by w.j.debi

Dear Mother Eve, with Abel in your arms
and Cain, his brother, playing at your side,
did you delight in all their childish charms,
and feel the warming glow of mother's pride?

No doubt you saw the wonder in their eyes,
and healed their stings and bruises with your kiss.
You sang them both to sleep with lullabies
which turned their tears and fears to peaceful bliss.

But Mother Eve, you also knew despair.
You learned that life brings heartache as a cost.
When brother turned on brother, you were there,
the first to know how children can be lost.

Oh, Mother Eve, you did your best, it's clear.
So, cherish precious moments; hold them dear.
