Love Poem No 1 of 5

First Swallow of the Summer

she was the first swallow of summer
and came like flitting light
upon the pond
I saw her
from the summer shadows
watched her dart among the men
and then
with idle chatter
elicit smiles
approving glances
I found her resting
on the edges
of dissatisfaction
taking chances 
I asked cool questions
offered smiles
and faux connection
she was my first lover of the season
first lover of my life
on dreamy summer evenings
we chased moonbeams
'cross the lawn
frolicked in our passion
through darkness until dawn
light faded
in the fall
as shedding colours
cruelled our flight
she looked to
far-off places
far beyond my sight
my heart
was spent on maybes
with hope
like sifting sand
her restless
need for motion
sought liaisons
not yet planned
the bird of hand
has flown
the one
that must fly free
she's the last swallow of the autumn
I must
her be
