The Gist

by Clockwise

I saw her in the distance,
dancing in the street,
I drew that portrait of her,
now warped from all the heat.
My nerve was slow to gather,
but my heart could not resist.
I could go on like this forever,
but I think you get the gist.

I took her hand in marriage.
She took my name and yoke.
There were many gifts to cherish,
now damaged by the smoke.
Our honeymoon together,
still worth the reminisce.
I could tell this tale forever,
but it seems you get the gist.

We made it through the hard times;
played those lovers' games.
Our baby was our pride and joy,
now scarred by all the flames.
Her boredom tore our wedded bond;
my anger broke her wrist.
The story still goes on and on,
but it's clear you get the gist.

I wandered through the wild,
and I fell among the trash.
My sadness kept me cold at night.
My pockets lined with ash.
I bit down hard upon the leather,
I heard that fire's hiss--
I wanted it to end forever.
Tell me you get the gist!

It's hard to hear you pray for me--
you sound like such a liar.
No God could ever care, you see,
this soul's been charred by fire.
So take this crumpled letter,
that's clutched within my fist.
It reads like this forever,
someday you'll get the gist.
